Athens, the capital of Greece, is the country’s city with the largest area and – with almost 4 million - the most populous Greek city. The city is both the economically and politically most significant city of Greece, since important financial centers and the parliament are located there. As far as science is concerned, Athens has numerous research institutes that operate in the field of archeology, since Athens was the cultural capital of ancient times. Athens is considered the birthplace of democracy and a basis of economic (Delian League) and political power. The touristic highlight is the Acropolis that is located slightly above the city of Athens, the Agora, the classical marketplace, as well as numerous museums with stunning masterpieces of ancient times. With all this, Athens is absolutely worth the journey, not least because of its culinary delights. The international commercial airport of the Greek capital, Athens Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH), is situated 27 km east of the city center.
